my question based on classroom exercise doing.  instances of server 2008 running on virtual machines in classroom.  instructor's server domain controller.  each of student servers has been configured terminal services role.  student user id's domain have administrative rights--my user id student12.  documents folder each student's server has been redirected instructor's server.  instructor's server name serverdc.  server server12.  partner's server server11.  i configure remoteapp rdp file for wordpad on server12; however, save to my documents folder on serverdc ( \\serverdc\students\student12\documents ).  i go partner's server, server11, log on domain student12, open windows explorer, , double-click wordpad rdp file shows in my documents folder (stored on serverdc).  launches wordpad.  question here is, where application running?  on server created (server12) or server rdp file saved (serverdc)?  inclined server12, because don't know if serverdc has th

i have 650 pos windows xp machines accessible via vpn connection our data center.  these machines scheduled reboot via scheduled task nightly between 2 , 3 - there 3 different times within hour of these machines reboot.  so - when reboot occurs theoretically, there 200+ machines rebooting @ once.   we seeing hit , miss issues of extremely long logins occurring (5-10-15+ min). have enabled verbose logging login process - , seeing machines hanging on "applying group policy" or "applying schedule tasks" or "login scripts". my thought - gpo on vpn may impact performance, , in addition, have 230 machines trying pull down gpo settings @ same time - may cause enough network congestion cause slow link. so question - how can determine if gpo detecting slow link?  if need adjust default of 500kbps, how determine adjust number to?  i realize simple solution may further stagger reboot process, however, have hour window type of maintenace because of our hou

i administering 2008 r2 domain.  when new user accounts created, set temporary password , check "user must change password @ next logon" box on user account in aduc.  controlled the default domain policy, our account passwords expire every 30 days.  policy apply temporary passwords before account accessed first time?  if you assign password user and check "user must change password @ next logon", pwdlastset attribute assigned 0. condition can last forever. eventually, when user logs on first time, if years later, password assigned still works, they must change password, , system assigns value corresponding current date pwdlastset. if maxpwdage 30 days, password next expire 30 days later (30 days after user first logged on , changed password). make sense? richard mueller - mvp directory services Windows Server  > 

i have windows 2012 hyper-v cluster 2 nodes. vms , vhds reside in csv on equalogic san. recently, had data vhd become corrupted on file server, moved data corrupted vhd a new vhd. after complete , server online, copied old corrupted vhd onto external usb hard drive. trying access old vhd mounting directly on 2012 node , error: couldnt mount file the disk image isnt initialized, contains partitions arent recognizable, or contains volumes havent been assigned driver letters. please use disk management snap-9in make sure disk, partitions, , volumes in usable state. when go disk management, go ahead , set online , shows drive no partition on it. have lost data? can vhd mount again can recover data it? okay, going , closing out since found issue... it turned out there nothing wrong these vhds copied. not in state allows them mounted volume. instead, needed attach them virtual machine, , worked fine. created virtual machine on 1 of hyperv servers, attached vhd file in propert

hi, we have problem our windows server 2008 r2 dns servers resolving domains. when perform nslookup on these domains returning "server failed" error message. after searching identified following article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;968372 to me, seemed issue implemented work around described. experiencing no problems few weeks before issue recurred. verified registry values still in place, , have been clearing cache on dns servers has been working. we've had reports of domain cannot resolved. have cleared dns cache , restarted dns servers , domain still returning "server failed" error in nslookup. besides implementing forwarders, there else can do? perhaps raise maxcachettl value 2 days else? daniel. the bizzare thing these results, if run commands again say..2 mins later on our dc's, result 490 instead of 3843. run again 5 mins later, it's 3843. third server 4.2.2.2 returns consistent result. thank you.

i'm have windows 8 server windows 8 consumer hyper-v guest i have standalone pc running straight windows 8 consumer. i have couple of issues:   when using metro rdp, there's no way take out of full screen mode (windowed mode),   have multiple rdp sessions open side side can work/see both.  i dont appear have ability anymore since full screen.  i have toggle between two.   having metro rdp in full screen makes of "cool" , "improved" metro things not work.  for instance, try pull start menu or reboot vm.   seems activate client.  since there's no indication of pc menu attached to, found out hard way when client rebooted , not vm. to around these i've started running rdp command line: mstsc    any appreciated. thanks thank you, helps, i've got stick "original" rdp i think thats bad design.  its confusing , not intuitive @ all.   it still not indicate instance performing action against.   if "win key gue

running server 2008 sp2 following hard drives: drive 1: 64gb, system volume drive 2: 1.5tb, spanned raid 5 volume drive 3: 1.5tb, spanned raid 5 volume drive 4: 1.5tb, spanned raid 5 volume all bios raid features turned off. raid 5 volume entirely software based in windows. drive 2 failed, , expected, array functioning 2 drives. then, while in disk manager, spanned raid 5 volume accidently deleted. drives 2, 3 , 4 show "unallocated!" nothing else has been attempted, including attempting recreate anything. how can raid 5 volume recovered? thanks, mike if have no backups can try 1 of many do-it-yourself recovery tools or possibly 1 of disk recovery services.     regards, dave patrick .... microsoft certified professional -microsoft mvp [windows] Windows Server  >
