hello guys! i'm trying sort out little problem , wondering if done in 'correct' way (other, of course, scrap , in 21 century technologies :) i have bunch of ms-dos clients need connect network file shares, i'd have on 2003 server cluster. the thing is, clients connect netbios, can't use 'cname'/'cluster network name resource' solutions. discovered if use legacy key 'optionalnames' in lanmanserver registry, clients can connect server. now question - can suggest way automate fail-over in such nasty scheme? when resource group fail-overs, need to: remove registry key 'passive' node (assuming online), add same key node became active, and, troublesome - probably, have restart 'server' service, doesn't registry parameters after start. so if will, say, 'net stop server || net start server' in generic application/generic script, create fail of other 'share' resources in group. sooo... have ideas? :) htt

are there "known issues" in distributing printers gpp concerning number of them ? let's have parc of 600 network printers, distributed on 15 sites interconnected 10 mb wan links. per experience, you'd create 1 gpp, 2 gpp, 10 gpp or 50 gpp ? login time should kept in acceptable range. the use of per site gpo is, in opinion, best approach.  in fact, want know if microsoft thought of "optimal" number of printers push in "bulk deployment" gpp in medium-sized network, , if so, number or range ? i have configured environment had on 250 gpp printer mappings... , worked acceptable performance... if mapping 250 printers take long time users mapped approx 5 performance 1min to process entire list , quicker process list second time there no printers actions perform. so yes takes time map lot of printers , after first run delay hardly noticable... not recommend more 250 / 300 printers in 1 gpo manageability point of view. hope helps alan burchill (

recently have been having problems hyper v virtual machine.   we have virtual machine, running server 2008 r2, named terminal has .vhd houses program named procent , it's data.  the server runs microsoft sbs it's primary os. the virtual machine disappeared , couldn't found in usual file, nor found doing scan of c drive.  the virtual hard disk still there data present.  we had tree of snapshots, , backup daily, no data has been lost. i created new virtual machine , renamed terminal , attached .vhd it.  all of our workstations connect through tcp virtual machine through vpn named virtual network 1.  the gateway terminal 192.168.3.254. i can still procent through connecting terminal on server, , environment intact.  however none of workstations able correct using remote desktop before crash happened.   any recommendations? you have not described how rdp connection happens. this direct vm itself. if these definition files used ip address different. if rebu

hi all. i have updated of our windows servers latest service patches, packs, etc. however, every server has 5 patches left installed , reported wsus console. thing is, none of server have yellow shield indicating there patches waiting installed. updates have been approved, yet status remain 'not installed'. servers have been rebooted, etc, no luck. does have ideas? let's start listing 5 updates reported not installed, and group names updates have been approved pick 1 server experiencing problem , perform following steps: 1. record system time. 2. restart automatic updates service (net stop/start wuauserv). 3. run command 'wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow'. 4. wait 30 minutes. 5. post entries windowsupdate.log starting @ time recorded in step #1. lawrence garvin, m.s., mcitp:ea, mcdba principal/cto, onsite technology solutions, houston, texas microsoft mvp - software distribution (2005-2009)

i installed fsrm on windows 2008 r2 server. have active file screen blocking audio, video , executibles. the screen works fine message pops states "access denied", user not have permission and "try again" button highlighted. there way either change message more specific or replace message? hi, the possible set group policy cannot find related information. maybe can set notification email to user are blocked file screening, which triggered event log?
