Windows 2008 Dropping Registration in DNS
there additional needs done may missing? hoping use gpo mass change these servers after experiencing problem on handful, reluctant make change in bulk until confident problem not arise again.
should noted problem not appear affect windows 2003 servers , has not affected windows 2008 clients either. such cant find common denominator.
scott,
can you elaborate you're changing?
i'm assuming mean changing dns addresses on 550 servers say, eg. 10.10.0.10 10.10.0.20. i'm assuming 10.10.0.10 (in example) dc hosting ad zone servers joined to, , 10.10.0.20 dc. therefore, if both in example dcs in same domain hosting same exact zone name , zone ad integrated, means settings same, updates set either secure or secue , unsecure, etc.
are assumptions correct?
if are, can't see why servers having trouble regsitering.
maybe if can provide example before , after ipconfig /all of 1 of servers, , indicate relationship of new dc/dns server , old dc/dns server, , if it's same zone, replication scope, etc, , changes there if any, figure out what's going on.
fyi - things need registration work:
- primary dns suffix matches zone name in dns
- dns zone allowed updates. secure only allow joined members register
- dns ip address in nic dns servers hosting zone (no outside dns, or other dns either doesn't host zone or has sort of reference zone, such secondary, stubs, etc).
- dhcp client service on registering client machine (server or otherwise) running. (yes, that's dhcp client service, not dhcp server service). necessary service , misnomer "dns registration service."
