Shadow Copy Fails on Storage Server 2003

i have dell poweredge 2900 running storage server 2003 r2. 2 weeks ago, backups (with backup exec) began failing error:

- aofo: initialization failure on: "\\storage.tfr.local\shadow?copy?components". advanced open file option used: microsoft volume shadow copy service (vss).

v-79-10000-11217 - vss snapshot error. microsoft volume shadow copy service (vss) snapshot failed. make sure provider services , tasks running. check windows event viewer details.

i spent quite bit of time troubleshooting dell technical support. discovered problem began when added hard drive raid array , expanded volume. ended doing full os reinstall.
