Question about running a Domain Controller and SQL on same server ?? - tom

we have new dell windows 2008 server running sql 2008 workgroup.  runs accounting apps , considered lightly used.  nothing else other run acct software.  want know if ok use server backup domain controller, dns, dhcp, etc.  our network has approx 60 users , has 2 domain contollers both running windows server 2003 sp2.  wanting to move ad one of current 2003 servers new dell server running windows 2008 , decommission old server.      thanks - tom

in past i dealing sql server 2005 express , windows server 2005. 1 of documents read in research:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229

note following section. assume same applies sql server 2008, wrong:

2.10 installing sql server express on windows domain controller

security note recommend against running sql server express on domain controller.
possible install sql server express on windows domain controller; however, cannot run on windows server 2003 domain controller local service or network service. sql server service accounts should run windows domain user accounts. possible install sql server service accounts run local system, option not recommended.

not change role of server after install sql server express. example, if install sql server express on member server, not use dcpromo tool promote server domain controller. or, if install sql server express on domain controller, not use dcpromo demote server member server. changing role of server after install sql server express can result in loss of functionality , not supported.

i found article (again regarding w2k3) implies problem dacl's removed.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929665

i should add if sql server database not accessed client computers, option install app , sql server on workstation, , remove server before running dcpromo.
