Windows 7 32-bit boot.wim takes a long time to load on PXE clients after copying from WDS server
i have setup new installation of wds on server 2008 r2 enterprise , have number of boot images loaded, including server 2008 (vista 32-bit) , 2008 r2 (win 7 64-bit). seem work fine on of our dell computers. have created boot image boot.wim file found on windows 7 32-bit installation dvd. purpose of image ease addition of drivers our newest computers, yet remain 32-bit can used of older computers. have win 7 boot image image deployment, , win 7 capture image capturing new custom installations.
i have been searching google , bing days no avail trying find out why windows 7 boot image takes longer load on clients other boot images. winpe images take no time @ (seconds), vista boot images take less minute, win 7 boot image can take ten fifteen minutes load. have added few nic drivers computers we've tested with, it's unlikely it's driver issue. slow point client (even core i7 machines) after image copied on network client ("windows copying files..."). of data copies , progress bar completes without interruption, unlikely network related, since other boot images work on same machines. once progress bar completes, stays on screen completed progress bar 5 ten minutes (which hardware differences account for) before advancing graphical win 7 progress bar. setup continue normal, ask requisite questions, , technicians able either image computer wds or upload captured image wds without issue. system working, wds supposed decrease time takes technicians image computers compared using disc-based pe (like bart), not increase it.
my gut tells me either copied image expanding during slow time period (i.e., decompressing) or looking proper drivers computer , takes while find them reason. see expansion taking while if wds console correct. in related vein, haven't yet found explanation numbers in "image size" column of boot image screen in wds console. vista boot/capture images weigh in @ 379mb, , server 2008 r2 64-bit boot image 1040mb. reason, win 7 32-bit boot image 1973mb, twice size of nearest competitor. i'm assuming (although haven't read anywhere) number decompressed size of image, although when mount images using imagex mounted size near 2gb size, more 400mb.
so, of in mind, question this: have bad, overstuffed boot.wim file win 7 32-bit source media, or normal large in wds (the original file size 164mb)? if it's normal, slowness function of expansion of copied .wim file on client, or there else going on? if it's because it's large, there can removed streamline process , make load time shorter? go down road of adding drivers vista boot image, assuming we'll moving towards deploying win 7 our clients in future, i'd rather work properly.
thanks light can shed on issue.
hi,
it abnormal windows 7 boot image take fifteen minutes load though little big other boot images. since other boot images load properly, afraid there wrong windows 7 boot image. please obtain new boot.wim file windows 7 32bit disk , test result. please not inject drivers @ first.
what’s result?
