Best practice on free disk space for Hyper-V VHDX?
i have large hyper-v 2012 r2 host server many fc raid storage unit (san) physically connected it. storage unit formatter in ntfs filesystem well. large capacity raid, 10 tb (the smaller) 35 tb (the larger), total capacity around 65 tb overall. on hyper-v host have few virtual servers (all 2012 r2 std) , 1 main business file virtual server, on hyper-v host did create few vhdx volumes physically located on raid storages , attached virtual server (guest os), according microsoft best practice hyper-v (no physical attach virtual guest os). working fine , quick no problem. did observe microsoft recommendation on vhdx, main "production" volume, did fixed size vhdx (15 tb) , archives volumes (low access), leave them variable vhdx.
now getting bit confused regarding microsoft best practice ntfs filesystem free space management... because in 1 hand have de physical raid disks ntfs , have virtual vhdx ntfs too.
during initial setup (on "test lab"), created test vhdxs fit 100% (well 99% technically) of physical disk because don't want loose uses of disk capacity... when wanted use veeam backup backup vhdx, hit problem veeam can't use shadow copy because lack of free "physical" space on vhdx up-level. did resized volume according ms recommendation, 15% free space. example have 5 tb physical drive, hosting 4.25 tb vhdx file. veeam working fine... have slight problem software running on virtual file server , manufacturer told me "hey, volume getting low , not following ms recommandation of 15% free space on ntfs volume".
so confused, don't want loose 30% of physical storage on each of volume, doesn't make sense??? have 5 tb physical drive, hosting 4.25 tb vhdx volume can exceed 3.60 tb of datas... goes 5 tb physical drive, 3.60 tb total capacity? did miss here?
could imagine on 35 tb storage? 35 tb physical storage, hosting a 29.75 tb vhdx can't exceed 25,30 tb capacity? really?!
please me clarifying point of free space management... thanks!
hi sir,
>>but when wanted use veeam backup backup vhdx,
this backup working @ hyper-v host level .
>>a software running on virtual file server , manufacturer told me "hey, volume getting low , not following ms recommandation of 15% free space on ntfs volume".
this software working @ vm level .
i can understand both of them may need 15% free space .
in case , i'd suggest ignore/disable "software warning" in vm , backup vm on host level .
or backup vm inside virtual machine .
best regards,
elton
