Win2k3 unable to change user password

a windows 2003 server (standard edition) running service pack 2 , patches. active directory console, when right-click on username, select "reset password...", type desired password 2 dialog boxes , click on "ok", following "active directory" error message comes up: "windows cannot complete password change usernamexyz because: system cannot find file specified."

this applies users in container.

no errors reported in event logs.

by way, passwords can changed @ workstations logged in users , via "net user..." command @ server console.

this server domain controller , has never had novel or netware connection.

i have restarted server in safe mode, logged in , restarted again.

i have used adsiedit.msc check user parameters, there none.

i have installed hotfix refered in kb931211.

any ideas?

hi.

thanks post.

from description, understand error message stating “windows cannot complete password change usernamexyz because: system cannot find file specified” received when trying reset user password on windows 2003 server (standard edition) service pack 2; however, password can changed on client side. server dc , has never had novel or netware connection. in addition, there nothing found after using adsiedit.msc check user parameters.

this issue may occur if ‘administrator’ account’s profile corrupt.

now suggest try log on administrator account , check if user password can reset. if other user can reset password properly, please rename “documents , settings\<problematic user>” folder “documents , settings\<problematic user>_old” , logon problematic user test issue again. if user profile cannot renamed, may need boot server safe mode , rename it.

hope this issue.
