Unable to change screen resolution after installing Windows 7


after updating windows 7, unable change screen resolution. have tried the standard means via control panel unsuccesfully.  have checked video driver , states running fine , no updates available. resolution fine windows xp. stuck @ minimum 640x480 , need 1024x768. display comes "standard pnp monitor on standard vga graphic adapter". available graphic memory 1mb , high color 16 bit. please me favor responses by being very detailed, avoiding acronyms or abbreviations. extremely computer illiterate , not understand many things might take granted.

by way, if running windows 7 on physical computer, please ensure computer computer compatible windows 7, please try contact manufacturer of display card of computer latest driver windows 7, install , check whether works.
