Shortcuts in profile path issue
i have multiple static profiles 7 different software/hardware configurations in department.
i referencing profile in each user object \\server_name_hidden\profile\%computername%. works mean copy of profile each machine configuration. have on 200 clients not realistic solution. thought i'd have 1 folder per configuration , create shortcuts named after each machine, point shortcuts relevant profile folder and use profile path above in each user object. however, doesn't work , i'm @ loss know why.
can throw light on please ?
thanks
andy
hello andy,
please allow me confirm understandings correct. understand it, issue is:
you have multiple user profiles based on software/hardware configurations (computer). have on 200 clients , don't want create relevant 200 profile folders. need practice create 7 profiles according software/hardware configurations , point users profile them relevantly.
if have misunderstood concerns please feel free let me know.
explanation :
==============
it should expected shortcut not accepted roaming profile location because folder (not shortcut files) can used specifying profile location. windows vista clients, there administrative template policy setting can fulfill requirement:
computer configuration---> policies---> administrative template---> system---> user profiles--->set roaming profile path users logging onto computer
however, policy setting can applied windows vista , later windows operating systems not windows xp clients. in other word, there no method specify per-computer roaming profile windows server 2003 , former operating systems , can set per-user roaming profile in user object.
suggestion :
==============
you can count on ntfs junctions points achieve goal.
example:
you have 7 profiles folder (one folder per configuration) such as:
…\profiles\profile_1\
…\profiles\profile_2\
…\profiles\profile_3\
…\profiles\profile_4\
…\profiles\profile_5\
…\profiles\profile_6\
…\profiles\profile_7\
create shared folder such profile_store, in create empty folders as:
…\profile_store\%computername%\
use linkd create junction points \%computername%\ folder relative profile folder. however, please note file conflict when several users using same profile try attempt update files in roaming profile folder. mandatory profile choice.
if have questions or concerns, please not hesitate let me know.
