WSUS Updates Superseding Help.
hello everyone, new wsus , have configured test windows xp updates only. after first sync there 805 updates. going through them, , there update superseds one.
my question is, can decline updates or approve them , let client pc decide if needs earlier update?
i little confused @ this, want roll wsus out our organization don't want hae go through 8000 updates once add in windows 2003 / 2008 / 7 , vista.
what way achieve this? can client computers decide if need update or not if approve updates.
i looking around in forums , not find answer cleared me. can explain process of approving updates , that.
thank in advance.

quite true. you're looking @ catalog of every update windows xp released on past eleven years -- 800+ sounds right.

you *can* ... "best practice" approve install updates not superseded, , after updates installed, superseded updates reported "100% installed/notapplicable" can safely declined. reason don't want decline updates prematurely because declined update not display state information, , state information can helpful second source of information identify other updates have not yet been installed.
what *can* unilaterally decline update says superseded windows xp service pack. since working presumption every windows xp system @ service pack 3 (if it's not, hasn't been updated in couple of years anyway), update superseded sp3 (or sp2 or sp1) worthless , can unilaterally declined.
but don't want hae go through 8000 updates once add in windows 2003 / 2008 / 7 , vista.
luckily don't have to. filter on approval="unapproved" , status="needed". enable "supersedence" column , sort. approve unapproved updates blue icon @ top of tree, or updates have no icon @ all.

they can ... instead of downloading several gigabytes of content, you'll end downloading close hundred gigabytes of content.

really!? seems talk process in forum @ least once month past 6 years.
so can explain process of approving updates , that.
but make easier find, i'm going write , post in blog article @ patchzone.org. :-)
in meantime, may find benefit reviewing wsus operations guide.
