Giving user-specific friendly name to network printers

i'm mere user in enterprise situation. printers have cryptic names (alphanumeric strings) i'm sure have meaning perspective of infrastructure management, absolutely no meaning purpose of mere user trying keep track of printer on computer corresponds physical computer out in cube farm. there way mere user create alias name network printer? if involves administrators of sort, not happen, solution requires user privileges preferred. however, can retain information procedure requires administrator privileges can opportunistically ask them when circumstances right.
no can't create local printer uses local port in format \\printserver\printshare on xp standard user. task requires admin access on xp
you need windows vista , greater.
you not able rename printer connections name in windows operating system unless admin on print server @ point break existing connection server.
a local printer better way go in windows 7 or 8.
