Windows Server 2008 R2 clients can't double click to open Office files

let me start saying don't know server 2008.

i have server set desktop clients (windows 7 pro 64-bit) can log in user on own machines.  on 2 of client machines (mine , bosses, have admin rights on everything) couple funny things happening:

1.  can't open word or excel file double clicking icon on desktop.  error follows:

excel

microsoft excel cannot access file 'c:\users\(username)\appdata\roaming\microsoft\excel\xlstart\personal.xlsb'.  there several possible reasons:  file name or path not exist.  file being used program.  workbook trying save has same name open workbook.

word

the file normal.dotm cannot opened because there problems contents.

and then

word cannot open document template. (c:\users\(username)\...\avwiz14s.dotm)

and then

word cannot open existing file. (normal)

and word stops responding.

note can open these documents start menu.  have determined error has server because have tried bunch of stuff on internet, including excel hotfix, did nothing.

2.  desktop icons flicker, rearrange themselves, , disappear @ times.  not know causes this, believe server issue.

3.  recycle bin errors every time log in, , every time try delete anything:

the recycle bin on \\intecserver\office employee files\kneureuter\my documents\my videos corrupted.  want empty recycle bin drive?

sometimes error 3-4 different directories.

what i've tried:

i tried reinstalling office, , made no difference.

i have drive server "office employee files" mapped network drive y:.  can open , go account folder on there, navigate "desktop" , open files there, not on physical desktop on computer.

these files aren't shortcuts on desktop, permanent home on desktop.

just reiterate, if moved these files folder on desktop, open fine.  if open them within excel or word, open fine.  if open them server drive mapped onto terminal, open fine.  can't open them double-clicking file if directly on desktop.  ideas?

i logged onto account different computer , double-clicking open files worked fine on computer.  both computers running windows 7 pro 64-bit , office 2010 pro.  limits machine , bosses machine.

since can't create shortcut on desktop, created new folder on desktop , put files in folder.  there created shortcut , put on desktop.  worked!

however, that's band-aid.  need fix problem sooner later. 

anyone have ideas?  thanks!

if  the desktop or documents folder redirected network location, office applications may exhibit  the similar issues .
