DNS A Record keeps reverting after creating DFS Root

a week or ago began process of migrating files server 2003 box server 2008.  hoping find utility make process smooth 1 , began using file server migration toolkit.

after setting dfs root unable access files on original server (fs_1).  upon pinging fs_1 receieved reply ip address of dfs root box (dfs_1).  logged dns servers , changed record original ip address of fs_1.  problem every 12-24 hours record on dns servers reverts ip address of dfs root (dfs_1).  i've removed dfs root entires , cannot seem figure out casuing ip address keep reverting ip of dfs root...  ideas?

hello keith,

do implement active directory-integrated dns zone on dns server? guess behavior can occur due reason dfs root server (dfs_1) dynamic update ip address in dns zone. dynamic update, dfs_1 can update ip address in dns zone if manually change it.

by default, computers statically configured tcp/ip attempt dynamically register host (a) , pointer (ptr) resource records ip addresses configured , used installed network connections. computers register records based on qualified domain name (fqdn).

dynamic updates can sent of following reasons or events:

1. ip address added, removed, or modified in tcp/ip properties configuration 1 of installed network connections.

2. ip address lease changes or renews dhcp server 1 of installed network connections. example, when computer started or if ipconfig /renew command used.

3. ipconfig /registerdns command used manually force refresh of client name registration in dns.

4. @ startup time, when computer turned on.

5. member server promoted domain controller.

when 1 of previous events triggers dynamic update, dhcp client service (not dns client service) sends updates. designed if change ip address information occurs because of dhcp, corresponding updates in dns performed synchronize name-to-address mappings computer. dhcp client service performs function network connections used on system, including connections not configured use dhcp.

for more information dynamic update, please refer section “how client , server computers update dns names” in following technet online document.
