DNS Delegation

i have a  win 2003 native forest will 65 child domain.the forest zone hosting dns subzones for 65 child domains.the forest zone become big , has starting affecting replication.i tasked setting delegation child domains , child domainscan hosting there domain records in domain partition.we decide try in couple virtual environments before going production.so logged on 1 of child domains , created separate zone child domain named child.root.com , got records populated etc.in 1 lab had manually create delegation on forest root zone child domain.in lab delegation got created automatically.i need to define process production , dont seem undertstand why behaviour different in labs.

are child domains represented as separate dns zones? if so, create secondaries on dns servers in respective child domains, transfer zones master, change type primary ad-integrated, point dcs in child domains local dns servers, restart netlogon on each, , create delegation on dns in forest root domain...
