Server 2012 Remote Desktop "Admin Mode" missing Host Configuration
hi,
i've searched forums, technet library, google, bing, without success. please can clarify following me:
i'm looking way configure rdp session host settings (redirection restrictions, limit color depth, etc.) stand-alone (non-domain-member/workgroup machine) server 2012 in "admin mode". pretty same in windows 2008 (r2) using host configuration snap-in.
i understand host configuration snap-in gone in 2012 (for whatever reason?!) , installing rds session host role requires me make machine member of a domain configure settings using server manager (for whatever reason?!). i'm not entirely sure if need cal run rds session host on windows server @ least it seems change settings using gpedit.msc in computer\windows components\remote desktop services\remote desktop session host\... (strangely not settings seem work).
the ultimate question: there way tweak things on stand-alone server 2012 running admin mode only? if so, how?
thanks,
stefan

hi stefan,
limit maximum display resolution applies true multi-monitor connections. remote desktop client 7 (6.1.7600) or above required make true multi-mon connection. did test making true multi-monitor connection? client operating system , rd client version did use in tests? have not tested see if resolution limit still applies rdp8 multi-monitor connections.
limit maximum color depth applies rdp 7.1 or below connections, , lowest may limit 16-bit (if 16-bit not supported client connection refused). rdp 8 connections always connect @ 32-bit.
for server intend to have administrative remote desktop connections you normally should not install rdsh. now, means must use group policy and/or wmi commands and/or registry changes if default rdp settings do not meet needs because not able use server manager configure rds. if use old rds powershell stuff may configuring well, of new 2012 rds powershell commands not work because based on server being joined domain , part of session collection.
if wish may choose install rdsh on server intend make rd remote administrative connections to. avoid need rds cals may use /admin command line switch, this:
mstsc /admin
one reason people choose install rdsh on server need connect administrative purposes if they need more 2 active sessions @ time, or if need make non-admin rdp connections server though doing admin work (there differences in capabilities between admin rdp connection , regular rdp connection).
if want make regular (non-admin) rdp connections standalone rdsh server need configure license mode , specify rd licensing server (localhost) via local group policy or wmi commands or manual registry edits. have not tested on standalone 2012 server yet believe work fine.
there no documentation @ moment regarding precise rdp group policy setting differences between 2008 r2 , 2012. 2012 server rdsh installed need aware deployment , collection settings configured in server manager may conflict group policy rds settings , gp typically take precedence.
