Maintenance of large spanned volumes (defrag, chkdsk etc)
hi forum
i have server running windows server 2003 r2 standard.
on server have a 6 tb spanned ntfs volume, comprised of 4 dynamic disks, 2 1tb, 2 2tb.
bad blocks have been reported on spanned volume/underlying disks. users have reported file corruption on volume.
when logging on server, 1 of volumes marked 'offline' in disk management, , volume displayed 'at risk' intermittently. onlining marked offline volume resolves condition, , returns state of volume 'healthy'.
i have approximately 11% free disk space. (702gb free)
questions:
1. how long (rough ballpark estimate) chkdsk take on volume size?
2. chkdsk run quicker if scheduled run @ restart?
3. chkdsk required, or can use other tools perform online analysis of disk state , mark potential bad blocks bad?
4. bad blocks on 1 of these volumes reason volume being marked offline/at risk?
any advice or assistance can on issue appreciated.
regards,
max
hi max,
1. the time chkdsk takes depends on several factors such condition of volume, check disk settings , number of files has check. please refer "understanding chkdsk time requirements" , "predicting chkdsk time requirements" sections on article:
an explanation of new /c , /i switches available use chkdsk.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314835
2. as far know, chkdsk on computer restart take longer time chkdsk online. if chkdsk scheduled run when computer restarts, binary module contains verification code autochk.exe, native windows program. because autochk.exe runs in computer's startup sequence, autochk.exe not have benefit of virtual memory or of other win32 services.
3. generally speaking, if find bad blocks reports, chkdsk first tool use troubleshoot. fix logical errors.
4. the offline/at risk volume can caused several reasons such bad blocks , physical problem. in case, should casued bad blocks.
hope helps.
regards,
bruce
