Migrate WSUS 3.2 on server 2008 with "external" SQL DB to Server 2012 R2

i trying determine best way replace our 2008 wsus 3.2 server. not sure if fact current wsus server using db on separate sql2008 server causing issues or not.

originally thought would:
          create new server
          install wsus on new server
copy content on old server new server
          turn off old server
use "old server" name , ip on "new" server
point new server external sql db

have read best practices , looked recommended create new server (with new name), make "downstream" existing server, synchronize , "promote" it. when try that:
cannot "add" new server downstream server on existing server -> search of machine name leads nothing though can ping new old
manual synchronization old server produces following error , fails:
sqlexception: procedure or function 'spgetupdatesforbulkhideinreplicasync' expects parameter '@xmlallupdateids', not supplied.
when @ existing server -> options -> update source, "existing" server has same settings "new" server (i.e. looking @ instead of windows update , marked replica of upstream). happening because both reading db , "new" 1 updated , "old" 1 swallowed updates? note once change existing 1 microsoft update, new 1 changes to.

if problem indeed lie them both pointing same external db, how best perform migration?

please advise.....

my head bloody :)

hi vtandi,

1. on old wsus server, in "update source", may "synchronize microsoft update";

on new wsus server, in "update source", may "synchronize windows server update services server", in "server name", type name of old wsus server, port number 80(wsus 2008 use http port 80 default, wsus 2012 r2 use http port 8530 default). , check "this server replica of upstream server".

2. if new server can sync old wsus server successfully, then, not need migrate susdb or content folders.

3. way, what exact database old wsus server , new wsus server use?

best regards,

anne
